Why Clean Pallets and Containers are a Must for Logistics & Warehousing
Pallets, crates, Dolavs and tote boxes move constantly between suppliers, warehouses, vehicles and customers. Along the way they pick up food residue, grease, dust and transport grime. If they go back into use without proper cleaning, that contamination travels with them.
Here's why logistics and warehousing operations are switching from manual cleaning to automated washing, and how to choose the right machine.
Why Dirty Pallets and Containers Are a Problem
Contamination Spreads from Load to Load
Residue left on a pallet or crate transfers to the next product, vehicle and customer site. In food distribution, that is a direct food safety risk.
Hygiene Standards are Harder to Meet
In food service distribution, reusable crates, totes and bins must be cleaned thoroughly before reuse. Inconsistent cleaning makes compliance with food hygiene requirements harder to demonstrate.
Product Loss and Spoilage
Goods that come into contact with contaminated equipment may be rejected, reworked or written off. Every rejected load adds cost.
Pallets and Containers Wear out Sooner
Dirt and residue left to build up shorten the working life of reusable equipment. Regular washing keeps pallets, crates and pallet boxes in service longer and reduces replacement spend.
Manual Cleaning vs Automated Washing
Hand cleaning with hoses and pressure washers works at low volumes, but it struggles as throughput grows.
- Labour: manual washing ties up staff who could be picking, loading or dispatching.
- Consistency: hand-cleaning results depend on who is doing it. IWM machines hold set wash and rinse temperatures with digital controllers and dose detergent automatically.
- Water and detergent: IWM washers recirculate filtered wash water instead of running it straight to drain.
Proven Cleaning Results
In trials with Dolav and detergent specialist Holchem, pallet boxes coated with a UV-detectable gel were washed in a customised IWM P100 pallet washer, and no gel remained afterwards. In follow-up trials, heavily soiled boxes reached a "cautionary clean" standard or better under ATP testing.
Which Washing Machine Does Your Operation Need?
IWM's range for logistics and warehousing covers:
Not sure which machine fits? Tell us what you clean and how many items per hour. Speak with our team.
Wash, Sanitise and Dry: Matching the Process to the Load
General logistics operations may only need washing to remove grime, oil and swarf. For the food sector, IWM machines can be fitted with a separate sanitiser dosing unit. Where items must go straight back into use, air knife drying on tray washers and integrated drying on pallet washers remove excess water.
What to Consider When Choosing a Washing System
- Peak volume per hour, not just the average
- Item types and sizes
- Manual loading or automatic handling
- Wash only, or sanitise and dry as well
- Heating by steam, electricity or gas
- Floor space and ongoing servicing
Why Logistics Operations Choose IWM
IWM manufactures its machines in food-grade stainless steel and has supplied tray washers to UK industry for nearly five decades.

Frequently Asked Questions About Industrial Pallet & Container Washing
Can One Machine Wash Pallets and Crates?
Yes. IWM offers combination tray and pallet washing systems for sites that handle both.
What is a Dolav Washer?
A Dolav washer, also called a pallet box washer, cleans large plastic Dolavs, pallet boxes and bulk containers. IWM supplies them as stand-alone cabinet washers or inline tunnel systems.
What is Returnable Transit Packaging?
Returnable transit packaging is reusable equipment, such as pallets, crates, totes, Dolavs and bins, that moves goods through the supply chain and comes back to be used again. Because it is reused, it needs cleaning between trips.
Can Pallets and Crates be Dried After Washing?
Yes. IWM tray washers can be fitted with air knife drying, and pallet washers can be supplied with integrated drying, so items are ready for immediate reuse.
Can I Lease a Pallet or Container Washer?
Yes. IWM offers finance and leasing on terms from 18 months to 5 years, with monthly or quarterly payments.
